About Toms River NJ

Toms River is a township in Ocean County NJ. As of a 2012 census it has a population of approximately 92,093. Its original name was the Township of Dover and was incorporated as one of New Jersey’s first 104 townships by the Township Act of 1798 of the New Jersey Legislature. The town had its name changed to Toms River Township based on a referendum passed in 2006. The origin of the name Toms River has been attributed in turn to English Captain William Tom, farmer and ferryman Thomas Luker, and a Native American named Tom. Toms River is bordered by the Ocean County towns of Berkeley, Brick, Island Heights, Jackson, Lakewood, Lavallette, Manchester, Seaside Heights, and South Toms River.
